Understanding Democracy
The struggle for democracy in Nigeria gained significant momentum in 1993 following the annulment of the June 12 presidential election, which was widely regarded as the freest and fairest election in the country's history. The election was believed to have been won by Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, but the military government annulled the results, leading to nationwide protests and political unrest.
After years of military rule, Nigeria returned to democratic governance on May 29, 1999, with the election of Olusegun Obasanjo as President. Since then, Nigeria has experienced uninterrupted democratic rule, making it the longest democratic period in the nation's history.
Democracy in Nigeria has brought regular elections, civilian leadership, greater political participation, and increased freedom of expression. Notable democratic transitions include the elections of Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, Goodluck Jonathan, Muhammadu Buhari, and Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Despite these achievements, Nigeria's democracy continues to face challenges such as electoral malpractice, corruption, insecurity, and economic difficulties. Nevertheless, the country's democratic journey since 1993 reflects the resilience of its people and their commitment to democratic governance, accountability, and national development.
